Hello! My name is Kieran and here is my story.
Growing up in a financially not well-off household, my parents never had enough money to go on holiday. It was not until the age of 22 that I went on my first holiday abroad to Berlin, Germany, for 9 days after mustering up enough courage to go and get on a flight for the very first time. During that time I stayed in a hostel, met some cool people from all over the world, and explored somewhere I had always wanted to go after spending the better part of one year learning some German through my university.
I returned with this newfound experience, and just knew there and then, I HAD to do something. Originally I had planned to save up enough money to live in Germany for up to 6 months, but after one month of deliberation I scrapped that idea and decided that I was going to save up enough money to go travelling around wider Europe instead.
I conducted a lot of research on places to travel and how much it would cost on average to live and travel in each country. I quickly came to the conclusion that Eastern Europe was cheap and so set it as my go to destination. I saved as much as I possibly could from my monthly wage, renting a room in shared housing, never going on nights out, introducing a strict food budget, cutting wine completely out of my life.
I was putting away roughly £600 each month towards my travel goals, all while working a full-time minimum wage job. After 6 months of saving, with nothing but the prospect of long-term travel on my mind, I handed in my notice, quit my job, left my rented accommodation, moved all my luggage back into my parents home, and within 6 days I was on that first flight out of the UK. I was a brave, young, 23 year old man, ready to explore Europe, and everything was completely new to me.
